Republicanism ‘like Bamboo’. I love that description. I love it that we are part of something bigger and have a functioning monarchy from afar which keeps the connection from where we came from. It works well. Looking at the recent appointments to Governors General I would be very fearful of an appointed president and and elected one would be a disaster. With the hereditary monarchy you get no choice but the role has limits.

As for the very unfortunate appointment to the national gallery- last time I was there and it will the very last time I go unless there is a visiting exhibition of an artist that I like, I was so disappointed with the mostly rubbish they had on exhibition.

The person you mentioned should be guilty of hate speech, shouldn’t he?

Abdul and his ilk appear to have nothing but heart filled hatred and contempt for Western Culture and more specifically, Australia. And of course, It's somehow the fault and caused by the Jews, who have been incessantly bombed and attacked almost daily, by Terrorists groups who call for their total annihilation (as a prerequisite to a "peace " plan), Some Plan!

Elements of Australian Citizenry now appear to look progressively more and more like Nazi Germany of the 1930's, and by which we should all be appalled, given the atrocities that followed.

But no, muderous Terrorist groups appear to be an exulted class by some institutions (universities and the like) and, incredibly, ably supported by elements of the popular press, as well as the Government in some instances.

This does not auger well for our collective futures and their twisted cause will not stop with the Jews.

Thanks John, couldn't agree mor. If there is any genocide around it is in the intent of Hamas, Hezbollah, and their supporters in Australia and the rest of the world to destroy Israel. This is not an issue free speech but of incitement to commit a crime.

Oh, and there is nothing demeaning about Australia's relationship to the UK.

John. Thanks for your insights. I remember well that lovely sunny day by Sydney Harbour in 1988.

At that time both my girlfriend (now wife) and I served in the Army Reserve. We were proud to do so.

Nowadays my view of this country is far different. I am sickened by the hate spewed by Abdul and his kind. Our govts are all authoritarian and no longer serve the people. Instead issuing edicts, and attacking me and others if we dare question their non evidence based policies on covid, climate change, fire ants etc etc.

Last Tuesday I had lunch at Romeo's, Toorak Rd. with a friend who is a Israeli-Australian citizen. Most of what you mention in your excellent article was sadly also reflected in our table conversation. In 2024 it has become illegal to raise an outstretched right arm, but quite OK to fly various murderous terrorist flags calling for a Jewish genocide. We all heard "from the river to the sea..."

What is happening and de-facto is tolerated in Australia is a racist national outrage. I don't get it. Is it all to do with ALP vote-harvesting?

Insightful words, John.

I wouldn’t trust a Liberal government to write a Constitution in this age of ‘Wokeness’, but can you imagine the document that would be produced by the Labor and Greens Left-wing Wankers????

I agree with you John on just about everything, but the republic must happen one day. It is just madness to maintain this royal link to the UK. Yes it works ok, but it is demeaning. Having said that I realize I will never see it. It is not a front-of-mind issue for Australians and probably never will be without some cathartic situation.
